NOTE:
This is a shorter encore of our Friday night’s full evening concert.

Hymns to Freedom

Hymns to Freedom

Exploring the story of racial injustice throughout history, this 'docu-concert' paints contrasting musical pictures: Discord, tension and division juxtaposed with respect, reconciliation and unity.

Corey Butler’s Hymns to Freedom project features Jackie Richardson, well known actor and one of Canada’s foremost gospel, blues and jazz singers.

Come and be educated by the story, entertained by the music and inspired to live in harmony.

Dramatic Metamorphosis

Dramatic Metamorphosis

Escape from the noise this evening and immerse yourself in the sublime works one of the greatest Romantic era composers: Tchaikovsky.

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 is full of sweeping melodies , dramatic contrasts and a recurring “fate” theme. There is a sense of both strength and vulnerability throughout as the struggle with destiny eventually resolves from darkness to triumph.

By contrast, Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations for cello are light airy, elegant and simply charming. As a special treat, you'll hear them performed for the first time on double bass played by superstar Joel Quarrington. And speaking of first times: we present the world premiere performance of the Grand Prize winning piece from our 2025/26 Young Composer Competition.

Spring Fling

Spring Fling

Copland’s Appalachian Spring opens with a slowly blooming introduction to musical themes that evoke a sense of open skies, fresh beginnings and simple pleasures.

Beethoven shares his solo woodland walks with us in his lush Pastorale Symphony, complete with woodwind bird calls and thunderous lower strings.

Special guest Luke Welch plays black composer Florence Price’s Piano Concerto, itself a spring-like story of re-emergence after its long lost manuscript was found. Price includes a toe-tapping theme inspired by the African juba dance.

You’ll leave with refreshed with a spring in your step!
